1138 Resurrection and Spirit, and Thomas without probing Lord – John(20)1-31 (by Whirlwind)

First, let’s look at what happened first after Jesus’ resurrection and see that Peter and John did not know that Jesus would be resurrected from the dead. Second, we quoted our previous article regarding the details of Jesus’ resurrection to discuss the passages followed the first one, in which we discussed a possible method of inspiration for the Bible, emphasizing only that God already knew that the Bible could not be passed down in its original form without error, and that He must have considered this issue when He inspired it. Here we are only sharing a possible solution that men can think of, and that He will surely do a more thorough job. Third, we see that Jesus’ spirit body after His resurrection is not restricted by matter, and we also see that if we are in the Holy Spirit, anyone’s sins we forgive will be forgiven. Fourth, we mentioned Thomas’ unbelief and his character. Finally, according to Jesus’ words, we see that Thomas believed in the Lord Jesus without probing Him, and that the Gospel of John was written for the purpose of having life.

1. Jesus’ Resurrection

“Now on the first day of the week Mary Magdalene came early to the tomb, while it was still dark, and saw the stone already taken away from the tomb. So she ran and came to Simon Peter and to the other disciple whom Jesus loved, and said to them, “They have taken away the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid Him.” So Peter and the other disciple went forth, and they were going to the tomb. The two were running together; and the other disciple ran ahead faster than Peter and came to the tomb first; and stooping and looking in, he saw the linen wrappings lying there; but he did not go in. And so Simon Peter also came, following him, and entered the tomb; and he saw the linen wrappings lying there, and the face-cloth which had been on His head, not lying with the linen wrappings, but rolled up in a place by itself. So the other disciple who had first come to the tomb then also entered, and he saw and believed. For as yet they did not understand the Scripture, that He must rise again from the dead. So the disciples went away again to their own homes.”(John 20:1-10)

It is clearly described here that Mary Magdalene came to the tomb early in the morning of the first day of the week while it was still dark. She thought someone had taken the Lord away from the tomb, so she ran to tell Peter and John. They also ran to see the tomb and believed what she thought, “For as yet they did not understand the Scripture, that He must rise again from the dead.”(John 20:9) So they had to go back.

Please note that she and they ran as soon as they knew about this. This is an example for us, letting us know that once we realize that it is the Lord’s will, we should do it immediately and quickly. And we also see again that Peter’s personality at that time was different from John’s. He did it first and then thought about it regardless of the situation. Just like when Jesus was arrested, “Simon Peter then, having a sword, drew it and struck the high priest’s slave, and cut off his right ear; and the slave’s name was Malchus.”(John 18:10) Finally, Jesus performed a miracle, “…He touched his ear and healed him.”(Luke 22:51) Only then the matter was settled.

2. Jesus’ appearances after His resurrection

“But Mary was standing outside the tomb weeping; and so, as she wept, she stooped and looked into the tomb; and she saw two angels in white sitting, one at the head and one at the feet, where the body of Jesus had been lying. And they said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping?” She said to them, “Because they have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid Him.” When she had said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, and did not know that it was Jesus. Jesus said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you seeking?” Supposing Him to be the gardener, she said to Him, “Sir, if you have carried Him away, tell me where you have laid Him, and I will take Him away.” Jesus said to her, “Mary!” She turned and said to Him in Hebrew, “Rabboni!” (which means, Teacher). Jesus said to her, “Stop clinging to Me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father; but go to My brethren and say to them, ‘I ascend to My Father and your Father, and My God and your God.’” Mary Magdalene came, announcing to the disciples, “I have seen the Lord,” and that He had said these things to her.”(John 20:11-18)

First of all, we can see once again that Jesus’ spirit body is very different from His early body after His resurrection. Unless He is willing to open people’s eyes and allow them to truly see, they can only turn a blind eye! You see, Mary “…saw Jesus standing there, and did not know that it was Jesus.”(John 20:14) She knew Jesus very well before He died, and she didn’t recognize Him before her eyes were opened. Here we see how Jesus opened her eyes.

We have previously discussed these and related verses in detail in “3. Details of Jesus’ Resurrection” of “1085 Jesus’ death, burial, and the controversial issue in resurrection – Jesus(37).” Please go to “https://a-christian-voice.com/” and click “Understanding of Spiritual Life” to find this article.

In this article, we see the order of events after Jesus’ resurrection according to the original text of the Bible in the Strong’s Concordance. First we see, “Now after the Sabbath, as it began to dawn toward the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary came to look at the grave.”(Matthew 28:1) So they knew about the Lord’s resurrection, but they did not say that they saw the appearance of Jesus. They did not enter the tomb the first time, for an angel of the Lord rolled back the stone and sat on it. Then they split into two groups, Mary Magdalene went to meet Peter and John, and the other Mary went to meet the other women. We have discussed in detail why this is said, and we also saw that Peter would run to the tomb a second time at a later time, so I will not go into details here.

We just discussed that when Mary Magdalene went to see Peter and John, they believed her words about carrying Him away from the tomb. That is to say, the whole process took some time, and it was already daybreak when Jesus appeared to her. This can also be seen from what God tells us through the Bible is consistent. While living in Galilee, Jesus prophesied, “…The Son of Man is going to be delivered into the hands of men; and they will kill Him, and He will be raised on the third day. …”(Matthew 17:22-23) The Jewish day is from dusk to the second dusk. Jesus died before dusk on the day of preparation (see John 19:31-33), so it was counted as the first day of His death. Then came the Sabbath on the second day. To count the Lord’s Day as a day, it must be after dawn. Therefore, Jesus’ prophecy was that He would be resurrected three days later, which means that Jesus appeared to Mary Magdalene already at daybreak.

Please note that in this article we have spoken and explained that except for the most parts agreed in the Gospel of Mark, the other three Gospels are completely consistent, thus coming to a possible approach to the inspiration of Scripture. Please note that we are not saying that the Bible is written in this way. We are just emphasizing that God already knew that the Bible could not be passed down in its original form without error. He must have considered this issue when He inspired it. Here we are just sharing a method that men can think of. He will definitely do a more thorough job.

This method is one of the possible solutions to this problem that we explain using the basic theory of coding theory. In coding theory, we use time to reduce errors by sending signals slowly, and have the function of automatically correcting some errors. The consistency of the Bible tells us that the same conclusion can be reached using different scriptures. Compared with writing only once, this writing method increases the length, but it will reduce errors and can correct some errors. That is to say, here we use a longer article to achieve the same effect.

3. Jesus’ spiritual body is not limited by matter and the Holy Spirit

“So when it was evening on that day, the first day of the week, and when the doors were shut where the disciples were, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in their midst and said to them, “Peace be with you.” And when He had said this, He showed them both His hands and His side. The disciples then rejoiced when they saw the Lord. So Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you; as the Father has sent Me, I also send you.” And when He had said this, He breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, their sins have been forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they have been retained.””(John 20:19-23)

First we notice that Jesus’ spiritual body was not restricted by matter, because even though the door was closed, He could still come among them! In the high priestly prayer, the Lord said to the eleven apostles, “for the words which You gave Me I have given to them; and they received them and truly understood that I came forth from You, and they believed that You sent Me.”(John 17:8) This time He sent the disciples and asked them to receive the Holy Spirit, because the Lord would not do work in vain. They already had the Holy Spirit dwelling in them, but it would not be manifested until the first Pentecost after the Lord’s resurrection when the Holy Spirit came. Don’t be surprised this is the case! As soon as we believe in the Lord, we have the indwelling Holy Spirit, but it is impossible for us to be conformed to the image of Jesus immediately. (See Romans 8:29) Isn’t this the same situation?

They must first receive the Holy Spirit, and then “If you forgive the sins of any, their sins have been forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they have been retained.”(John 20:23) So this can only be done in the Holy Spirit.

4. Thomas’s unbelief and his personality

“But Thomas, one of the twelve, called Didymus, was not with them when Jesus came. So the other disciples were saying to him, “We have seen the Lord!” But he said to them, “Unless I see in His hands the imprint of the nails, and put my finger into the place of the nails, and put my hand into His side, I will not believe.””(John 20:24-25)

Let’s look at Thomas’ personality. When “…Jesus then said to them plainly, “Lazarus is dead.””(John 11:14), “…Thomas, who is called Didymus, said to his fellow disciples, “Let us also go, so that we may die with Him.””(John 11:16), he directly expressed his reaction. When Jesus said, “And you know the way where I am going.”(John 14:4) “Thomas said to Him, “Lord, we do not know where You are going, how do we know the way?””(John 14:5) He also responded directly when he had a problem. This time, he also expressed his direct reaction immediately. Later we will see that the Bible clearly states that he believed when he saw Him in the end, and there was no need for him to probe into the nail scars of Jesus.

5. Thomas believed in Jesus without probing Him and the Gospel of John was written for having life

“After eight days His disciples were again inside, and Thomas with them. Jesus came, the doors having been shut, and stood in their midst and said, “Peace be with you.” Then He said to Thomas, “Reach here with your finger, and see My hands; and reach here your hand and put it into My side; and do not be unbelieving, but believing.” Thomas answered and said to Him, “My Lord and my God!” Jesus said to him, “Because you have seen Me, have you believed? Blessed are they who did not see, and yet believed.” Therefore many other signs Jesus also performed in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; but these have been written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing you may have life in His name.”(John 20:26-31)

First, it was confirmed once again that Jesus’ spirit body was not restricted by matter because the doors were closed. Second, we may be very curious, did Thomas prob the scars of the Lord? The answer is no. The last time the Lord came, Thomas didn’t even see Him, but this time he saw Him and believed, saying, “My Lord and my God!” Because the Lord said that you would believe because you saw, and did not mention the need to probe. Jesus will not lie. Judging from his personality and faith, he did not need to probe the Lord Jesus, and this is consistent with the Lord’s words. It is indeed consistent with what God tells us through the Bible is consistent. The Bible is clear said here. Only those who do not believe in the Lord’s words or cannot see clearly will have such a problem. In short, they are people who force their interpretation of the Bible.

It is clearly stated here why John only recorded eight miracles, because he believed that these miracles were sufficient to convince people that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that they can repent and have life. This is just as Jesus said, the purpose of studying the Bible is to have life, “You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; it is these that testify about Me; and you are unwilling to come to Me so that you may have life.”(John 5:39-40) This is true for both Jews and Gentiles, especially Gentiles. The Bible records the incident of Cornelius more clearly (see Acts 10:1-48). Afterwards, Peter said to the Jews, “And I remembered the word of the Lord, how He used to say, ‘John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.’ Therefore if God gave to them the same gift as He gave to us also after believing in the Lord Jesus Christ, who was I that I could stand in God’s way?” When they heard this, they quieted down and glorified God, saying, “Well then, God has granted to the Gentiles also the repentance that leads to life.””(Acts 11:16-18)

This is what Paul is saying, “So then as through one (Adam) transgression there resulted condemnation to all men, even so through one (Jesus) act of righteousness there resulted justification of life to all men. For as through the one man’s disobedience the many were made sinners, even so through the obedience of the One the many will be made righteous.”(Romans 5:18-19) Jesus took away sin by obeying God. This is why we spent a lot of time in “1096 Yu Hongjie’s Discipleship of Newcomers – Unbiblical Places (1)” to explain that the definition of sin is disobedience to God.

1137 Jesus’ Crucifixion and Apparent Contradictions – John(19)1-42 (by Whirlwind)

First, we looked at the mockery Jesus suffered before Pilate and Herod, and pointed out and discussed an obvious contradiction. Thus, we see that the inerrancy of the Bible does not refer to the literal meaning, but to what God tells us through the Bible is consistent. And we should not deceive ourselves and lie. Second, we look at the fact that Pilate originally intended to conduct a trial that was not a death sentence, and point out and discuss another apparent contradiction. Third, we described the process of Pilate handing Jesus over to the Jews to be crucified. Fourth, we described the details of Jesus’ crucifixion. Fifth, from the fact that Jesus entrusted His mother to John on the cross, we can see that He also fulfilled His human obligations and became our role model. We can also see that His death began salvation, and that the plan of salvation would not be fully completed until His resurrection. Sixth, we see how the Old Testament prophecy that not a bone of Jesus would be broken was fulfilled. Finally, we briefly mentioned Jesus’ burial and resurrection. After He was resurrected, the plan of salvation was fully completed.

1. Mocking Jesus and an apparent contradiction

“Pilate then took Jesus and scourged Him. And the soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns and put it on His head, and put a purple robe on Him; and they began to come up to Him and say, “Hail, King of the Jews!” and to give Him slaps in the face.”(John 19:1-3)

We have shared before that during Pilate’s trial of Jesus, He was sent to Herod. Therefore, He was not only mocked by Pilate’s soldiers, but also by Herod and his soldiers. As the scripture says, “And Herod with his soldiers, after treating Him with contempt and mocking Him, dressed Him in a gorgeous robe and sent Him back to Pilate.”(Luke 23:11) Therefore, the fact that Jesus was mocked by Pilate’s soldiers is recorded in the other three Gospels, but here it is only recorded that Jesus was mocked by Herod, which is not recorded in the other three Gospels. In short, all four Gospels record the mockery of Jesus after His arrest.

In the Book of Matthew it says, “Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the Praetorium and gathered the whole Roman cohort around Him. They stripped Him and put a scarlet robe on Him. And after twisting together a crown of thorns, they put it on His head, and a reed in His right hand; and they knelt down before Him and mocked Him, saying, “Hail, King of the Jews!” They spat on Him, and took the reed and began to beat Him on the head. After they had mocked Him, they took the scarlet robe off Him and put His own garments back on Him, and led Him away to crucify Him.”(Matthew 27:27-31)

In the Gospel of Mark it is recorded, “The soldiers took Him away into the palace (that is, the Praetorium), and they called together the whole Roman cohort. They dressed Him up in purple, and after twisting a crown of thorns, they put it on Him; and they began to acclaim Him, “Hail, King of the Jews!” They kept beating His head with a reed, and spitting on Him, and kneeling and bowing before Him. After they had mocked Him, they took the purple (G4210) robe off Him and put His own garments on Him. And they led Him out to crucify Him.”(Mark 15:16-20)

If we compare the scarlet robe used in the Book of Matthew with the purple robe used in the Books of Mark and John, we can see an obvious contradiction. If we truly believe that the Bible is inspired by God, we should not think that this is an error in the Bible, but would think about why God would inspire such an obvious contradiction? We thus clearly see that the inerrancy of the Bible does not refer to the literal meaning, but rather to the consistency of what God tells us through the Bible. When we do not discount the words of the Bible, we will naturally see why there is such an obvious contradiction in God’s inspiration. We have discussed this in detail before in “1111 The True Meaning of Biblical Inerrancy.” Please go to the website “https://a-christian-voice.com/” and click on “Understanding of Spiritual Life” to find this article. Thanks.

In a church that believes that the Bible is literally inerrant, which says that there are no obvious contradictions, is to deceive oneself and to lie. One should know that “…the devil…speaks from his own nature, for he is a liar and the father of lies.”(John 8:44) In other words, such a church is recognizing the devil as its father. In contrast, David simply “…despised the word of the LORD by doing evil in His sight? You have struck down Uriah the Hittite with the sword, have taken his wife to be your wife, and have killed him with the sword of the sons of Ammon.”(2 Samuel 12:9) “However, because by this deed you have given occasion to the enemies of the LORD to blaspheme, …”(2 Samuel 12:14) Doesn’t this kind of recognition of the devil as father give God greater opportunity to be blasphemed by Satan? As the result, they will also distort the interpretation of the Bible as Peter said, “…our beloved brother Paul, according to the wisdom given him, wrote to you, as also in all his letters, speaking in them of these things, in which are some things hard to understand, which the untaught and unstable distort, as they do also the rest of the Scriptures, to their own destruction.”(2 Peter 3:15-16)

Here we can notice that both scarlet and purple are noble colors, and purple was even used by kings, “…the crescent ornaments and the pendants and the purple robes which were on the kings of Midian, …”(Judges 8:26)  So even though the soldiers were mocking Jesus, they were actually kneeling down and mocking Him like a king. Doesn’t this fit with what He said to Pilate, “…“You say correctly that I am a king. For this I have been born, and for this I have come into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth hears My voice.”(John 18:37) Those who mocked Him were obviously not people of the truth.

2. Pilate’s original intention and another obvious contradiction

“Pilate came out again and said to them, “Behold, I am bringing Him out to you so that you may know that I find no guilt in Him.” Jesus then came out, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple(G4210) robe. Pilate said to them, “Behold, the Man!” So when the chief priests and the officers saw Him, they cried out saying, “Crucify, crucify!” Pilate said to them, “Take Him yourselves and crucify Him, for I find no guilt in Him.” The Jews answered him, “We have a law, and by that law He ought to die because He made Himself out to be the Son of God.” Therefore when Pilate heard this statement, he was even more afraid; and he entered into the Praetorium again and said to Jesus, “Where are You from?” But Jesus gave him no answer. So Pilate said to Him, “You do not speak to me? Do You not know that I have authority to release You, and I have authority to crucify You?” Jesus answered, “You would have no authority over Me, unless it had been given you from above; for this reason he who delivered Me to you has the greater sin.” As a result of this Pilate made efforts to release Him, but the Jews cried out saying, “If you release this Man, you are no friend of Caesar; everyone who makes himself out to be a king opposes Caesar.””(John 19:4-12)

Since Pilate could not find any crime in Jesus, Pilate originally meant, “Therefore I will punish Him and release Him.”(Luke 23:16) The Scripture here clearly explains how the Jews instigated him, and also shows why he really wanted to release Jesus. “For he knew that because of envy they had handed Him over.”(Matthew 27:18) Especially because they spoke the Law of the Jews, he was afraid in his heart. But since Jesus’ time had come, he could still crucify Him even though He was the Son of God. Therefore, the “from above” here not only refers to the administrative authority of Rome, but also means that in order to accomplish salvation, God must allow Satan to do this, like what describes at the beginning of the Book of Job. Here we also see how terrible it would be for the Jews to keep the law to the letter! So when Jesus said, “For truly I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter or stroke shall pass from the Law until all is accomplished.”(Matthew 5:18) This means that we must keep the true meaning of the Law, just like the example Jesus set for us. He kept the true meaning of the Sabbath, not the time specified in the Law. If we obey the Holy Spirit, we will automatically keep the true meaning of the Law.

Here we see another obvious contradiction. In the Gospels of Matthew it says, “After they had mocked Him, they took the scarlet robe off Him and put His own garments back on Him, and led Him away to crucify Him.”(Matthew 27:31) In the Gospels of Mark it says, “After they had mocked Him, they took the purple robe off Him and put His own garments on Him. And they led Him out to crucify Him.”(Mark 15:20) But in the Gospel of John it says, “Jesus then came out, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. Pilate said to them, “Behold, the Man!””(John 19:5) Some people may ask, what kind of clothes did He wear when He came out? This apparent contradiction is to draw our attention to the fact that John was the only one who went through the entire process, and that the Gospel of John was written last, thus correcting the original erroneous record. This also explains the reason why we had this apparent contradiction in inspiration. One thing you may have noticed is that obvious contradictions are usually so easy to see, and often in unimportant places, just like what we are talking about now is what clothes Jesus wore when he came out. It is really unimportant, but this obvious contradiction will make us pay attention to the things we should pay attention to!

3. Pilate handed Jesus over to the Jews for crucifixion

“Therefore when Pilate heard these words, he brought Jesus out, and sat down on the judgment seat at a place called The Pavement, but in Hebrew, Gabbatha. Now it was the day of preparation for the Passover; it was about the sixth hour. And he said to the Jews, “Behold, your King!” So they cried out, “Away with Him, away with Him, crucify Him!” Pilate said to them, “Shall I crucify your King?” The chief priests answered, “We have no king but Caesar.” So he then handed Him over to them to be crucified.”(John 19:13-16)

“While he was sitting on the judgment seat, his wife sent him a message, saying, “Have nothing to do with that righteous Man; for last night I suffered greatly in a dream because of Him.””(Matthew 27:19) Even so, “But they were insistent, with loud voices asking that He be crucified. And their voices began to prevail.”(Luke 23:23)

Finally, “When Pilate saw that he was accomplishing nothing, but rather that a riot was starting, he took water and washed his hands in front of the crowd, saying, “I am innocent of this Man’s blood; see to that yourselves.” And all the people said, “His blood shall be on us and on our children!” Then he released Barabbas for them; but after having Jesus scourged, he handed Him over to be crucified.”(Matthew 27:24-26) Pilate washed his hands, but he could not wash away his sin, because he still made such a decision against his conscience!

4. Details of Jesus’ crucifixion

“They took Jesus, therefore, and He went out, bearing His own cross, to the place called the Place of a Skull, which is called in Hebrew, Golgotha. There they crucified Him, and with Him two other men, one on either side, and Jesus in between. Pilate also wrote an inscription and put it on the cross. It was written, “JESUS THE NAZARENE, THE KING OF THE JEWS.” Therefore many of the Jews read this inscription, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city; and it was written in Hebrew, Latin and in Greek. So the chief priests of the Jews were saying to Pilate, “Do not write, ‘The King of the Jews’; but that He said, ‘I am King of the Jews.’” Pilate answered, “What I have written I have written.” Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took His outer garments and made four parts, a part to every soldier and also the tunic; now the tunic was seamless, woven in one piece. So they said to one another, “Let us not tear it, but cast lots for it, to decide whose it shall be”; this was to fulfill the Scripture: “They divided My outer garments among them, and for My clothing they cast lots.”  Therefore the soldiers did these things. …”(John 19:17-25)

Jesus initially carried the cross Himself, then Simon of Cyrene carried it later (see Matthew 27:32, Luke 23:26), and finally He was crucified on the Place of a Skull (Golgotha). There were two criminals crucified with Him. We have previously discussed the situation at “5. We can see that although Pilate crucified Jesus against his conscience, judging from the inscription written on the sign, he wrote “The King of the Jews” in three languages. It would have been quite easy for him to rewrite it, but he did not do so. He must have been afraid that others would not see that the Jews chose to crucify their own king. How ironic! As for the soldiers’ decision to divide Gis garments, it was a very reasonable choice, but the prophecy of the Old Testament was fulfilled because of it: “They divide my garments among them, And for my clothing they cast lots.”(Psalm 22:18)

5. Entrusted His mother to John and salvation accomplished

“…But standing by the cross of Jesus were His mother, and His mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. When Jesus then saw His mother (G3384), and the disciple whom He loved standing nearby, He said to His mother, “Woman (G1135), behold, your son!” Then He said to the disciple, “Behold, your mother!” From that hour the disciple took her into his own household. After this, Jesus, knowing that all things had already been accomplished, to fulfill the Scripture, said, “I am thirsty.” A jar full of sour wine was standing there; so they put a sponge full of the sour wine upon a branch of hyssop and brought it up to His mouth. Therefore when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, “It is finished!” And He bowed His head and gave up His spirit.”(John 19:25-30)

We see that John was the only apostle who stood before the cross and entered the government office. We also see that Jesus entrusted His mother to John, fulfilling the filial duty that should be performed in this world. “For God said, ‘Honor your father and mother,’ …”(Matthew 15:4) Please note that the Bible always uses the word “Honor” in this case and never talks about observing the Chinese style of filial (piety) obedience. Here He was our example, but He knew very well that she was not His Mother in heaven, for He specifically used the word woman (G1135) and spoke of mother (G3384) to John.

Regarding the accomplishment of salvation, we have discussed before, “He who was delivered over because of our transgressions, and was raised because of our justification.”(Romans 4:25) So after His resurrection, the plan of salvation was fully accomplished.

He was truly “…pierced through for our transgressions, He was crushed for our iniquities; The chastening for our well-being fell upon Him, And by His scourging we are healed.”(Isaiah 53:5) He has suffered the punishment for us and was crucified on the cross, so that we can have spiritual and temporal peace. And He has been scourged  for us, so we can be sure that we have been healed spiritually, but in fact not every worldly illness can be healed. The Triune God will not lie to us, so this refers to spiritual healing. As for worldly diseases being healed at times, this demonstrates His absolute sovereignty. Do not deceive yourself into thinking that because He has been wounded, our worldly diseases will definitely be healed.

6. Not a bone of Jesus shall be broken

“Then the Jews, because it was the day of preparation, so that the bodies would not remain on the cross on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was a high day), asked Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away. So the soldiers came, and broke the legs of the first man and of the other who was crucified with Him; but coming to Jesus, when they saw that He was already dead, they did not break His legs. But one of the soldiers pierced His side with a spear, and immediately blood and water came out. And he who has seen has testified, and his testimony is true; and he knows that he is telling the truth, so that you also may believe. For these things came to pass to fulfill the Scripture, “Not a bone of Him shall be broken.” And again another Scripture says, “They shall look on Him whom they pierced.””(John 19:31-37)

This refers to the Passover, “…nor are you to break any bone of it (lamb).”(Exodus 12:46) Because Jesus is the true Passover Lamb, as the Scripture says, “how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without blemish to God, cleanse your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?”(Hebrews 9:14) Here it is clearly stated why His legs were not broken. As for looking at the one they had pierced, it was saying in this verse, “I will pour out on the house of David and on the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the Spirit of grace and of supplication, so that they will look on Me whom they have pierced; …”(Zechariah 12:10)

Finally we see, “This is the One who came by water and blood, Jesus Christ; not with the water only, but with the water and with the blood. It is the Spirit who testifies, because the Spirit is the truth. For there are three that testify: the Spirit and the water and the blood; and the three are in agreement.”(1 John 5:6-8) Isn’t that the case? The scripture says, “But one of the soldiers pierced His side with a spear, and immediately blood and water came out.”(John 19:34)

In fact, we can also see an example of what God tells us through the Bible is consistent. Why? Jesus must have been very weak at the time, otherwise the Roman soldiers would not have forced Simon of Cyrene to help Him carry the cross. On the other hand, the soldiers probably did not expect Him to be dead, because they broke the legs of the two criminals who were not dead yet. But in order to make sure that He was dead, His side was pierced, and blood and water flowed out. Obviously, His weakened physical strength caused His death, so all the descriptions are consistent.

7. Jesus’ burial and resurrection

“After these things Joseph of Arimathea, being a disciple of Jesus, but a secret one for fear of the Jews, asked Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus; and Pilate granted permission. So he came and took away His body. Nicodemus, who had first come to Him by night, also came, bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about a hundred pounds weight. So they took the body of Jesus and bound it in linen wrappings with the spices, as is the burial custom of the Jews. Now in the place where He was crucified there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb in which no one had yet been laid. Therefore because of the Jewish day of preparation, since the tomb was nearby, they laid Jesus there.”(John 19:38-42)

Here it is mentioned that there were at least two people who were disciples in secret, Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus. After the death of Jesus, they had great courage to declare their identity as disciples. We also see that the location of His tomb seems to be a coincidence, but everything had been arranged long ago, fulfilling what the prophet said about Him in the Old Testament: “His grave was assigned with wicked men,

Yet He was with a rich man in His death, Because He had done no violence, Nor was there any deceit in His mouth.”(Isaiah 53:9) His tomb was in Joseph’s “…own new tomb, which he had hewn out in the rock; and he rolled a large stone against the entrance of the tomb and went away.”(Matthew 27:59-60)  Who would have prepared such a new tomb in advance if he had not been rich?

He also resurrected in this tomb, as the scripture says, “Now after the Sabbath, as it began to dawn toward the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary came to look at the grave. And behold, a severe earthquake had occurred, for an angel of the Lord descended from heaven and came and rolled away the stone and sat upon it. …The angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid; for I know that you are looking for Jesus who has been crucified. He is not here, for He has risen, just as He said. Come, see the place where He was lying.”(Matthew 28:1-6) The plan of salvation was fully accomplished after His death and resurrection.

1136 Jesus’ Arrest, Trial, and Innocence – John(18)1-40 (by Whirlwind)

First, let’s look at the scene of Jesus’ arrest. It also shows that for the narration of the same event, we must use a union, that is, we must match all the narrations so that we can restore the situation at that time.  Second, we shared Peter’s first denial of the Lord. John was the only person who witnessed all the events that happened after Jesus was arrested, and the Book of John was written last. Thus he added in the details that were not written in other Gospels, and explained in detail the differences between the first Peter’s denial and the last two ones.  Third, we recounted Jesus’ trial before Annas, the father-in-law of Caiaphas, the high priest. He was first brought before Annas bound.  Fourth, we continue to look at Peter’s second and third denials of the Lord and his repentance.  Fifth, we look at Jesus, the King of truth, from his trial before Caiaphas to his trial before Governor Pilate.  Finally, we see that Pilate could find no guilt in Jesus, but he ultimately decided against his conscience to hand Him over to the Jews to do whatever they wanted with Him.

1. Jesus’ arrest

“When Jesus had spoken these words, He went forth with His disciples over the ravine of the Kidron, where there was a garden, in which He entered with His disciples. Now Judas also, who was betraying Him, knew the place, for Jesus had often met there with His disciples. Judas then, having received the Roman cohort and officers from the chief priests and the Pharisees, came there with lanterns and torches and weapons. So Jesus, knowing all the things that were coming upon Him, went forth and said to them, “Whom do you seek?” They answered Him, “Jesus the Nazarene.” He said to them, “I am He.” And Judas also, who was betraying Him, was standing with them. So when He said to them, “I am He,” they drew back and fell to the ground. Therefore He again asked them, “Whom do you seek?” And they said, “Jesus the Nazarene.” Jesus answered, “I told you that I am He; so if you seek Me, let these go their way,” to fulfill the word which He spoke, “Of those whom You have given Me I lost not one.” Simon Peter then, having a sword, drew it and struck the high priest’s slave, and cut off his right ear; and the slave’s name was Malchus. So Jesus said to Peter, “Put the sword into the sheath; the cup which the Father has given Me, shall I not drink it?” So the Roman cohort and the commander and the officers of the Jews, arrested Jesus and bound Him, and led Him to Annas first; for he was father-in-law of Caiaphas, who was high priest that year. Now Caiaphas was the one who had advised the Jews that it was expedient for one man to die on behalf of the people.”(John 18:1-14)

We have just shared that John was the only person who saw all the things that happened after Jesus was arrested, and the Book of John was also the last one among Gospels written. We see that he basically did not repeat things that were already written in other gospels. We use the word “basically” because he had to repeat some of the things described in other Gospels when adding details.  That is to say, when describing the same event, we must use the union of the narrations in the four Gospels, that is, we must match all the narrations so that we can restore the situation at that time.

The garden must refer to the Garden of Gethsemane, where Jesus prayed, “…yet not what I will, but what You will.”(Mark 14:36) This is a promised prayer, for the Scripture says, “In the days of His flesh, He offered up both prayers and supplications with loud crying and tears to the One able to save Him from death, and He was heard because of His piety.”(Hebrews 5:7) So this refers to the prayer in the Garden of Gethsemane, because He prayed that Your will should be done, and the Father’s will was for Him to go to the cross to accomplish salvation, so Jesus did know what was going to happen to Him.

Then it was Judas who revealed Jesus through an intimate kiss (see Matthew 26:47-49). We see that they wanted to be 100% sure, so they asked Jesus personally, and when He answered, they fell to the ground.  We also see why He confirmed a second time that He was the one they were looking for, because He wanted to keep the rest of the people safe and wanted them to arrest only Him. The verse here also clearly states that He was arrested and brought to Annas.

During the process, a small incident occurred. Peter cut off the right ear of Malchus, the high priest’s servant. Luke 22:50-51 also recorded this incident and said that Jesus healed him. However, Luke did not mention the servant’s name. We can also see why the same thing had to be linked together.  In addition, this also explains why Jesus asked Peter to sheath his sword. He certainly knew that Peter could not protect Him with only that sword. Since He wanted Peter not to go to jail because hurting the other, so He performed a miracle to heal Malchus. This miracle was performed on a person with his name and is unquestionable.  On the other hand, this miracle also saved the impulsive Peter. Otherwise, we can imagine that Malchus and his relative who was present would not have let it go, and Peter would have had to go to jail!

2. Peter’s first denial

“Simon Peter was following Jesus, and so was another disciple. Now that disciple was known to the high priest, and entered with Jesus into the court of the high priest, but Peter was standing at the door outside. So the other disciple, who was known to the high priest, went out and spoke to the doorkeeper, and brought Peter in. Then the slave-girl who kept the door said to Peter, “You are not also one of this man’s disciples, are you?” He said, “I am not.” Now the slaves and the officers were standing there, having made a charcoal fire, for it was cold and they were warming themselves; and Peter was also with them, standing and warming himself.”(John 18:15-18)

We see before His arrest, “Peter said to Him, “Even if I have to die with You, I will not deny You.” All the disciples said the same thing too.”(Matthew 26:35) But the old self is unreliable, and when the time comes, “…Then all the disciples left Him and fled.”(Matthew 26:56) Peter was at least better, because “…Peter was following Him at a distance as far as the courtyard of the high priest, and entered in, and sat down with the officers to see the outcome.”(Matthew 26:58) Before Jesus had been judged, Peter already denied the Lord the first time without really realizing it!  It was not until the Holy Spirit came on the first Pentecost after the Lord’s resurrection that the disciples had the power to bear witness for the Lord, so they had to rely on the Holy Spirit. Same for us nowadays.

3. Trial before Annas, the father-in-law of Caiaphas, the high priest

“The high priest then questioned Jesus about His disciples, and about His teaching. Jesus answered him, “I have spoken openly to the world; I always taught in synagogues and in the temple, where all the Jews come together; and I spoke nothing in secret. Why do you question Me? Question those who have heard what I spoke to them; they know what I said.” When He had said this, one of the officers standing nearby struck Jesus, saying, “Is that the way You answer the high priest?” Jesus answered him, “If I have spoken wrongly, testify of the wrong; but if rightly, why do you strike Me?” So Annas sent Him bound to Caiaphas the high priest.”(John 18:19-24)

The high priest here refers to Caiaphas’ father-in-law Annas, because they would later take Jesus to the high priest Caiaphas.  Annas had judged Him in advance, and He was just telling the truth. We can also see Annas’ usual arrogance, because even his servants would beat people at will!

4. Peter’s second and third denials

“Now Simon Peter was standing and warming himself. So they said to him, “You are not also one of His disciples, are you?” He denied it, and said, “I am not.” One of the slaves of the high priest, being a relative of the one whose ear Peter cut off, said, “Did I not see you in the garden with Him?” Peter then denied it again, and immediately a rooster crowed.”(John 18:25-27)

Peter’s three denials are recorded in all four Gospels, the others being Matthew 26:69-75, Mark 14:66-72, and Luke 22:54-62. There is also a record of Peter’s repentance, as the scripture says, “And Peter remembered the word which Jesus had said, “Before a rooster crows, you will deny Me three times.” And he went out and wept bitterly.”(Matthew 26:75) If we take the narrative of the four Gospels together, we can understand what happened. It is quite long, so we’ll not go into details. Please go and read it yourself.

What we want to emphasize is the promise of the Bible, “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”(1 John 1:9) Jesus prayed before for Peter, “but I have prayed for you, that your faith may not fail; and you, when once you have turned again, strengthen your brothers.”(Luke 22:32) Jesus knew in advance that Peter would repent, and after he repented he did as Jesus’ prayer, and remained the leader among the apostles.

5. The trial of the King of truth before Pilate the Governor

“Then they led Jesus from Caiaphas into the Praetorium, and it was early; and they themselves did not enter into the Praetorium so that they would not be defiled, but might eat the Passover. Therefore Pilate went out to them and said, “What accusation do you bring against this Man?” They answered and said to him, “If this Man were not an evildoer, we would not have delivered Him to you.” So Pilate said to them, “Take Him yourselves, and judge Him according to your law.” The Jews said to him, “We are not permitted to put anyone to death,” to fulfill the word of Jesus which He spoke, signifying by what kind of death He was about to die. Therefore Pilate entered again into the Praetorium, and summoned Jesus and said to Him, “Are You the King of the Jews?” Jesus answered, “Are you saying this on your own initiative, or did others tell you about Me?” Pilate answered, “I am not a Jew, am I? Your own nation and the chief priests delivered You to me; what have You done?” Jesus answered, “My kingdom is not of this world. If My kingdom were of this world, then My servants would be fighting so that I would not be handed over to the Jews; but as it is, My kingdom is not of this realm.” Therefore Pilate said to Him, “So You are a king?” Jesus answered, “You say correctly that I am a king. For this I have been born, and for this I have come into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth hears My voice.””(John 18:28-37)

We have previously shared Matthew 26:57-68 about the trial before Caiaphas. According to Roman law, the Sanhedrin did not have the authority to kill, and this is also confirmed here.  So He was taken to the governor Pilate, hoping that he would sentence Him to death. After some twists and turns, they finally nailed Jesus to the cross as they wished.

First, the scripture tells us why Pilate came out of the Praetorium, and then they accused Him by lying, which also proved that although they wanted to kill Jesus, they did not have the authority.  Pilate interrogated Him in the Praetorium and the verses recounted his conversation with Jesus. When he asked Jesus whether He was the King of the Jews, Jesus said directly that He was the King who bore witness to the truth, that His kingdom was not of this world, and that only those who belonged to the truth would listen to His words, and that He came into this world for this reason.  Indeed, He is “…the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth.”(John 1:14) He came to bring us a more abundant life, as the scripture says, “…I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly.”(John 10:10)

6. Pilate could not find any guilt in Jesus

“Pilate said to Him, “What is truth?” And when he had said this, he went out again to the Jews and said to them, “I find no guilt in Him. But you have a custom that I release someone for you at the Passover; do you wish then that I release for you the King of the Jews?” So they cried out again, saying, “Not this Man, but Barabbas.” Now Barabbas was a robber.”(John 18:38-40)

We know from what Pilate said that he didn’t care what the truth was!  This also shows that he finally made the decision to crucify Jesus against his conscience, because Pilate said, “…I find no guilt in Him.”(John 18:38) Among this period, he also sent Him to Herod for judgment, “No, nor has Herod, for he sent Him back to us; and behold, nothing deserving death has been done by Him.”(Luke 23:15)

He gave the Jews a choice whether to release Jesus, but the Jews hated the innocent Jesus so much that they chose to release the famous robber and prisoner Barabbas, who “…was one who had been thrown into prison for an insurrection made in the city, and for murder.”(Luke 23:19) Finally, “But they were insistent, with loud voices asking that He be crucified. And their voices began to prevail. And Pilate pronounced sentence that their demand be granted. And he released the man they were asking for who had been thrown into prison for insurrection and murder, but he delivered Jesus to their will.”(Luke 23:23-25) Pilate made such a decision really against his conscience!

1135 Glory, words of Lord and His prayer, joy and unity – John(17)1-26 (by Whirlwind)

First, we will communicate the glory of God and the glory of Jesus Christ.  Second, we talked about the source of the Lord’s words and His prayers for apostles.  Third, the apostles will see the Lord resurrected from the dead and will be filled with the joy that the Lord has given and cannot be taken away.  Finally, we saw that He prayed for those who believe in Him, so that they may be united in Him. What we need to do is to demonstrate the unity He has given. We also discussed a related issue, which is that according to the Bible, there is a time period when the Holy Spirit and evil spirits will exist in Christians at the same time.

1. Glorious God the Father and Jesus Christ

“Jesus spoke these things; and lifting up His eyes to heaven, He said, “Father, the hour has come; glorify Your Son, that the Son may glorify You, even as You gave Him authority over all flesh, that to all whom You have given Him, He may give eternal life. This is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent. I glorified You on the earth, having accomplished the work which You have given Me to do. Now, Father, glorify Me together with Yourself, with the glory which I had with You before the world was.”(John 17:1-5)

Regarding glory, this is so different from what the world thinks. Let’s see what Jesus said after his resurrection.  Jesus said to them (the two disciples on the way to Emmaus), “…O foolish men and slow of heart to believe in all that the prophets have spoken! Was it not necessary for the Christ to suffer these things and to enter into His glory?”(Luke 24:25-26) This refers to Jesus glorifying God the Father through his crucifixion, “who, although He existed in the form of God, did not regard equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied Himself, taking the form of a bond-servant, and being made in the likeness of men. Being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.”(Philippians 2:6-8) So Jesus was equal with God before His incarnation.  Let us look at this verse then, “Now, Father, glorify Me together with Yourself, with the glory which I had with You before the world was.”(John 17:5) Is it obvious that before time He was equal in dignity and honor with God the Father?

Because He was a complete man during His incarnation, He said, ““Now My soul has become troubled; and what shall I say, ‘Father, save Me from this hour’? But for this purpose I came to this hour. Father, glorify Your name.” Then a voice came out of heaven: “I have both glorified it, and will glorify it again.””(John 12:27-28). If He used His divinity during His incarnation, how could He be troubled?  Yes, He knew He had come for this time, and therefore He willingly died in this way, glorifying the Father’s name.  He obeyed God all His life, as the Scripture says, “…I do exactly as the Father commanded Me. …”(John 14:31) Wasn’t that what He said when He fell on His face in prayer in the Garden of Gethsemane before He was crucified. “…My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me; yet not as I will, but as You will.”(Matthew 26:39)

We must emphasize that during the time of His incarnation, He was the Son of Man,  “and He gave Him authority to execute judgment, …”(John 5:27) “For this reason also, God highly exalted Him, and bestowed on Him the name which is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee will bow, of those who are in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and that every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”(Philippians 2:9-11) God is sovereign. It is determined that when we call Jesus Christ Lord, the glory goes to God the Father!  The Bible is inspired by God. We should not force our interpretation of the Bible but should follow its teachings.

Jesus also had the glory given to Him by the Father when He was on earth. We can see this by looking at what He did. He Himself said, “Jesus answered and said to them, “Go and report to John what you hear and see: the blind receive sight and the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, and the poor have the gospel preached to them.”(Matthew 11:4-5) Not only that, He also performed various miracles such as the five loaves and two fishes, and some of these things were even explicitly stated to be for His glory.  For example, before Jesus raised Lazarus from the dead, He said, “…This sickness is not to end in death, but for the glory of God, so that the Son of God may be glorified by it.”(John 11:4) His life would not change because of the glory He received in the world. He was still “…gentle and humble in heart, …”(Matthew 11:29) Usually it is easy for a person to become proud when he receives such great glory in the world, but He was not like that. It was because His life is always life. Our goal is to be conformed to His image (see Romans 8:29).

Then he talked about His mission when He was sent to the world: “This is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent.”(John 17:3) We have shared that during the period of His incarnation there is a sequence: the Father sends the Son, and the Holy Spirit does not come until the Son goes away.  He also said very clearly, “I glorified You on the earth, having accomplished the work which You have given Me to do.”(John 17:4) He also explained that He was indeed emptying Himself during His incarnation, because He is one of the Trinity and was equal in honor and glory with God before the creation of the world.

2. The source of Jesus’ words and His prayers

“I have manifested Your name to the men whom You gave Me out of the world; they were Yours and You gave them to Me, and they have kept Your word. Now they have come to know that everything You have given Me is from You; for the words which You gave Me I have given to them; and they received them and truly understood that I came forth from You, and they believed that You sent Me. I ask on their behalf; I do not ask on behalf of the world, but of those whom You have given Me; for they are Yours; and all things that are Mine are Yours, and Yours are Mine; and I have been glorified in them. I am no longer in the world; and yet they themselves are in the world, and I come to You. Holy Father, keep them in Your name, the name which You have given Me, that they may be one even as We are. While I was with them, I was keeping them in Your name which You have given Me; and I guarded them and not one of them perished but the son of perdition, so that the Scripture would be fulfilled.”(John 17:6-12)

He clearly said that He had completed the mission, and none of the people of God who were given to Him were lost, and they kept His Word, the Word of God that was given to them, and truly knew and believed that Jesus Christ was sent by God.  Here we need to emphasize that knowing and believing are two different things. The scripture says, “So faith comes from hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ.”(Romans 10:17) One can know the word by hearing it but not obey it. Only those who obey the word are the true believers.

Here He prays for them, but not for them to leave the world. Instead, He wants to keep them and let them be His witnesses on earth, just as the scripture says, “but you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be My witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and even to the remotest part of the earth.”(Acts 1:8) They knew that this would cost them their lives, but they still kept moving forward.  Take Peter for example. Jesus had told him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, when you were younger, you used to gird yourself and walk wherever you wished; but when you grow old, you will stretch out your hands and someone else will gird you, and bring you where you do not wish to go.”(John 21:18)

“Now this He said, signifying by what kind of death he would glorify God. …”(John 21:19)

These are some of the words spoken to the eleven apostles during the separation prayer at the Last Supper, after Judas, the betrayer, went out (see John 13:30). Let us see how they were chosen. “It was at this time that He went off to the mountain to pray, and He spent the whole night in prayer to God. And when day came, He called His disciples to Him and chose twelve of them, whom He also named as apostles.”(Luke 6:12-13) This includes Judas, the betrayer. He knew that Judas would betray Him, and as a human being, He could only pray all night to make sure it would happen and it was God’s will. In the end, he obeyed God and said, “While I was with them, I was keeping them in Your name which You have given Me; and I guarded them and not one of them perished but the son of perdition, so that the Scripture would be fulfilled.”(John 17:12)

When the words of the Scripture are fulfilled, the plan of salvation begins to be accomplished, so on the cross “…He said, “It is finished!” And He bowed His head and gave up His spirit.”(John 19:30) The resurrection on the third day completed salvation. “He who was delivered over because of our transgressions, and was raised because of our justification.”(Romans 4:25) “Therefore we have been buried with Him through baptism into death, so that as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life. For if we have become united with Him in the likeness of His death, certainly we shall also be in the likeness of His resurrection.”(Romans 6:4-5)5

This is the meaning of baptism. We have shared that under normal circumstances, we should be baptized as stated in the Great Commission, “having gone, then, disciple all the nations, (baptizing them — to the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.”(Matthew 28:19, YLT) Jesus also set an example for us, “But Jesus answering said to him (John the Baptist), “Permit it at this time; for in this way it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.” Then he permitted Him. After being baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; …”(Matthew 3:15-16) But there are exceptions. The criminal who was crucified with Jesus did believe, but he did not have the opportunity to be baptized. “And He said to him, “Truly I say to you, today you shall be with Me in Paradise.””(Luke 23:43) The criminal went to Paradise after his death, but the Bible never says, as some people believe, that every Christian goes to Paradise after death to await the judgment of the great white throne.

3. Joy, God’s Word of truth, and being sent

“But now I come to You; and these things I speak in the world so that they may have My joy made full in themselves. I have given them Your word; and the world has hated them, because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. I do not ask You to take them out of the world, but to keep them from the evil one. They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. Sanctify them in the truth; Your word is truth. As You sent Me into the world, I also have sent them into the world. For their sakes I sanctify Myself, that they themselves also may be sanctified in truth.”(John 17:13-19)

Now it was Jesus who told them what was about to happen, so they knew that all the prophecies about Him were true, and their hearts were filled with joy, “…and no one will take your joy away from you.”(John 16:22) He went to the cross because the world hated Him, and of course Jews also hated those who followed Him and thus did not belong to the world.  When His time had come and He was about to leave, He sent them, knowing that they must remain in the world as witnesses for Him, and therefore He only prayed that God would keep them from the evil one, Satan, until their time came.

We need to emphasize the point that the time has come, because people in the world usually think that longevity means God’s protection, but this is not the case!  The New Testament clearly tells us that the apostle James died at a relatively young age. It says, “Now about that time Herod the king laid hands on some who belonged to the church in order to mistreat them. And he had James the brother of John put to death with a sword.”(Acts 12:1-2) But “Precious in the sight of the LORD Is the death of His godly ones.”(Psalm 116:15) Did Jesus’ prayer go unanswered?  No, it was Jacob’s time.  Why do I say so?  In Revelation 21:2 we see the holy city, the New Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, “And the wall of the city had twelve foundation stones, and on them were the twelve names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb.”(Revelation 21:14) Jacob’s name is very glorious in there. This also explains that it is God who arranges the time when we will die. God’s view on death is very different from that of the world.

There is such an example in the Old Testament. After Josiah did many good things to obey God (see 2 Kings 22), the Lord also told him, “…you will be gathered to your grave in peace, …”(2 Kings 22:20) But in the end, “In his days Pharaoh Neco king of Egypt went up to the king of Assyria to the river Euphrates. And King Josiah went to meet him, and when Pharaoh Neco saw him he killed him at Megiddo.”(2 Kings 23:29) It definitely was not a peaceful death, could it be that what Jehovah told him was false?  No!  Let’s see what Josiah did in the end, “However, Josiah would not turn away from him (Neco king of Egypt), but disguised himself in order to make war with him; nor did he listen to the words of Neco from the mouth of God, but came to make war on the plain of Megiddo.”(2 Chronicles 35:22) The battle that Necho originally wanted had nothing to do with him, and God had warned him, but he still wanted to stand out. God used a feedback strategy, as the scripture says, “When a righteous man turns away from his righteousness, commits iniquity and dies because of it, for his iniquity which he has committed he will die. Again, when a wicked man turns away from his wickedness which he has committed and practices justice and righteousness, he will save his life.”(Ezekiel 18:26-27) Jehovah did give Josiah a chance and he chose not to take it. Can God be blamed for this?

The same is true in the New Testament, “…God our Savior, who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.”(1 Timothy 2:3-4) The plan of salvation gives people a chance, and people have free will and can choose to believe or not!  It is really important not to harden your heart and go against God’s will and seek your own death.  The conclusion is that unless the Triune God is willing to tell us, we cannot know the timing of His arrangement, because “The secret things belong to the LORD our God, but the things revealed belong to us and to our sons forever, …”(Deuteronomy 29:29)

4. To demonstrate the unity He has given us

“I do not ask on behalf of these alone, but for those also who believe in Me through their word; that they may all be one; even as You, Father, are in Me and I in You, that they also may be in Us, so that the world may believe that You sent Me. The glory which You have given Me I have given to them, that they may be one, just as We are one; I in them and You in Me, that they may be perfected in unity, so that the world may know that You sent Me, and loved them, even as You have loved Me. Father, I desire that they also, whom You have given Me, be with Me where I am, so that they may see My glory which You have given Me, for You loved Me before the foundation of the world. “O righteous Father, although the world has not known You, yet I have known You; and these have known that You sent Me; and I have made Your name known to them, and will make it known, so that the love with which You loved Me may be in them, and I in them.”(John 17:20-26)

It clearly states here that He not only prayed for the apostles, but also for us, so He gave us a chance to be saved, but people have free will and can make their own choices.  It also mentions here that He has given us His glory and unity, seeing that He was first united with God the Father, and then we can be united in Him.  Yes, we must first believe that He is in us in the form of the Holy Spirit, which means that the body of a Christian is the temple of the Holy Spirit, as the scripture says, “Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and that you are not your own? For you have been bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body.”(1 Corinthians 6:19-20) What we should pursue is to be one with Jesus, to be conformed to the image of Jesus (see Romans 8:29), and to have the life of Jesus.  But one thing to note is that just because others don’t listen to you doesn’t mean you have no life.  Our lives will not exceed Jesus’. Think about how many people listened to Jesus when He became flesh?  What we need to do is to have an ear that can hear and discern. That is why the Bible often says, “He who has an ear, let him hear!”  Like the seven churches mentioned in the Book of Revelation.

This brings up a common question: since the Holy Spirit dwells in Christians, are there also evil spirits in Christians at the same time?  According to the Bible, the answer is yes. Why?  Before we discuss this issue, we must point out that the evil spirits here do not refer to ghosts the unclean spirits. Ghosts are those that come from outside and enter the body, and there are ways to exorcise ghosts.  This is what the scripture says, “They came to the other side of the sea, into the country of the Gerasenes. When He got out of the boat, immediately a man from the tombs with an unclean spirit met Him.”(Mark 5:1-2) We see that Jesus was casting out demons at that time, “For He had been saying to him, “Come out of the man, you unclean spirit!””(Mark 5:8) It is true that demons are messengers of Satan. The evil spirits here refer to the messengers of Satan who live in us, not those from outside.  By the way, the Bible describes the man who was possessed by an unclean spirit as “…he had his dwelling among the tombs. And no one was able to bind him anymore, even with a chain.”(Mark 5:3) Even so, “Seeing Jesus from a distance, he ran up and bowed down before Him.”(Mark 5:6) If this man was completely possessed by an evil spirit, he would not have done this, so we can see that this man still had free will and could make choices!  This is the person who is most severely demon-possessed as described in the New Testament. Therefore, it is clear that humans cannot be completely possessed by demons. No wonder James said, “Submit therefore to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.”(James 4:7)

Let’s first look at how sin came about. It was because Satan successfully tempted Eve, and Adam chose to disobey God. Therefore, the scripture says, “…just as through one man (Adam) sin entered into the world, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men, because all sinned.”(Romans 5:12) This shows that sin comes from Satan.

Satan cannot be omnipresent like God, so when “The LORD said to Satan, “From where do you come?” Then Satan answered the LORD and said, “From roaming about on the earth and walking around on it.””(Job 1:7) On the other hand, Satan is not without servants, as the scripture says, “Therefore it is not surprising if his servants also disguise themselves as servants of righteousness, …”(2 Corinthians 11:15) Since Satan cannot dwell in everyone, the sin in everyone comes from evil spirits in the old self.  After we believe in the Lord, the Holy Spirit dwells in Christians, but I have never heard that Christians can completely put to death the old self as soon as they believe in the Lord. That is to say, for a period of time, Christians will have the Holy Spirit and evil spirits coexisting with them. Therefore, the scripture says, “For the good that I want, I do not do, but I practice the very evil that I do not want. But if I am doing the very thing I do not want, I am no longer the one doing it, but sin which dwells in me.”(Romans 7:19-20)

Since there is a period of time when the Holy Spirit and evil spirits exist in a Christian at the same time, and the goal for Christians is to be conformed to the sinless image of Jesus and completely put to death the old self, that is, from the presence of evil spirits to the absence of evil spirits, let us see how this gradual and continuous process occurs.  In other words, a Christian must go from being a disbeliever to believing in the Lord, and then “…from faith to faith; …”(Romans 1:17) Let your faith grow gradually, that is, slowly put your old self to death. We will use a certain sin and its related evil spirit to illustrate the process.

For that sin, the associated evil spirit can only be in us or leave us.  When this evil spirit is in us, we will commit the same sin again and again, which is what Paul said, “…for the willing is present in me, but the doing of the good is not.”(Romans 7:18) But when we draw toward the Lord and suppress this sin more and more day by day, which is commonly known as the Holy Spirit gradually growing in us, the evil spirit will become more and more uncomfortable in us until it can no longer bear it and has to leave.  After the evil spirit leaves, we are freed from that sin. In this way, one sin after another will be freed from the Christian, that is, the related evil spirits will leave one by one, until there are no evil spirits left and we are completely conformed to the image of Jesus.

This is what is generally said, that in us there is a new life and an old life coexisting. This old life, that is, the old self, is under the power of Satan. To put the old self to death is to let the evil spirits within us leave us, and the old self dies slowly because not all evil spirits leave at once.  Here we see another example of God being consistent in what He tells us through the Bible.

The remaining question is whether it is possible to completely put to death about the old self before I die?  Some people say that Christians always have a new life and the life from old self dies until our physical body dies. This statement is logically impossible!  Why?  If the old self is defined as the part that carries sin, and the old self cannot die completely during one’s lifetime, then it is impossible for a person to be completely conformed to the sinless Jesus during his lifetime. However, the Bible clearly states that there are examples of people being conformed to the image of Jesus during their lifetime.  Take Stephen for example. He was a man full of the Holy Spirit (see Acts 6:5). When the Jews stoned him to death, he said, “…Lord, do not hold this sin against them! …”(See Acts 7:59-60) This is essentially the same thing as what Jesus said on the cross, “…Father, forgive them; for they do not know what they are doing. …”(Luke 23:34) It can be seen that Stephan was conformed to the image of Jesus before his death. He was also the first disciple to be martyred for the Lord and the only one whom the Lord welcomed by standing at the right hand of God in heaven.  (See Acts 7:55-56)

Our spirit is dead like Adam (see Genesis 2:16-17, 5:5). When we believe in the Lord, we have a new sinless spirit from God, as the scripture says, “Moreover, I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; and I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. I will put My Spirit within you and cause you to walk in My statutes, and you will be careful to observe My ordinances.”(Ezekiel 36:26-27) Although the Bible does not explicitly say that the Holy Spirit dwells in the new spirit, this is a new spirit that has nothing to do with sin. According to what God tells us through the Bible is consistent, the Holy Spirit can only dwell in the new spirit.  As for the exact location of the new spirit, no one knows because the Bible does not say.

Jesus is in heaven now. Just as He said, “Father, I desire that they also, whom You have given Me, be with Me where I am, so that they may see My glory which You have given Me, …”(John 17:24) When He comes again, we will finally be with Him in Heaven.  Clearly the scripture is saying that they were united in love before the foundation of the world, “…for God is love.”(1 John 4:8) But the Father is also absolutely a righteous Father. Doesn’t the Psalm make this very clear? “Righteousness and justice are the foundation of Your throne; Lovingkindness and truth go before You.”(Psalm 89:14) We should not only talk about God’s love but also forget not God’s righteousness!
